This project was undertaken while I was on my industrial placement at Sagentia. The brief of the project was to design an industrial machine for tobacco reclamation from defected cigarettes during the manufacturing process. My role in the team was to design and manufacture a proof of principle rig which would slice down the length of a cigarette at a very high feed rate, up to 15 per second. My other role in the team was to help build and integrate the other proof of principle rigs into a continuous recycling line. The outcome of the project was successful sorting and processing of a defected cigarette into its constituent elements. This was also a great introduction to mechatronic components and automation techniques, specifically for P.O.P rigs in the form of programmable logic controllers.
